Gain an in-depth understanding of the prisoner’s experience, from initial intake at county jail to long-term confinement in state prison, including day-to-day life, work, living arrangements, custody interactions, and specific challenges faced by individuals whose first language is not English. Learn prison jargon related to key aspects of incarceration. Topics covered will include County Jail procedures, transport, the judicial process, intake procedures, prison housing, interactions with guards and gangs, contraband, PREA (Prison Rape Elimination Act), work assignments, meals, psychological and emotional health, available prison services, and unique challenges faced by Limited English Proficiency (LEP) individuals. This training will include interactive sessions with Nicholas, who brings firsthand experience as a formerly incarcerated individual. Nicholas, a former inmate who has successfully reintegrated into society after over six years in state custody, will provide unique insights and firsthand experience into the challenges faced by incarcerated individuals.
